AXALP Switzerland     11th October 2006

October saw the annual live firing exercise known as AXALP (Flieger-demonstration) take place. Located in the Swiss Alps, and adjacent to the Axalphorn mountain, this is the only chance for the general public to visit the Swiss Air Force's Ebenfluh range.

An early start is recommended to avoid the rush as five thousand or visitors can be expected to descend on the mountain. Also parking in Axalp village is limited being half full by 06:30am. From the village you have the option to walk or take the Ski-lift to the foot of the Axalphorn. It's then the hard work begins with a 2 hour hike of which two thirds is a near vertical climb. Once at the top you can reward yourself with an ice cold beer and Bratwurst layed on by the Air Force.

The flying action starts early with a full practice for the afternoons show. Swiss Air Force Alouette's, Cougar's and Super Pumas from Meiringen start proceedings with various scenario's including medi-vac evacuations and water bombing display's. The mountains then echoed to the sound of   F/A-18 Hornets and F-5 Tigers attacking various targets in the area. French Air Force Mirage F-1's out of Payerne also took part with some real low flying that had many of the photographers ducking for cover.

After a two hour break for lunch the show was opened with a Cougar dispensing it's full load of flare's. A solo Alouette then performed a short display followed by a pair of Super Pumas carrying water buckets for fire suppression. It was then the turn of the fast jets again, with some absolutely stunning flying taking place. The F/A18 Hornet solo demo performed it's superb routine with a couple of high speed passes producing visible shockwaves. Next up and bringing the show to a close were the Swiss Air Force display team the Patrouille Swisse flying their F-5's.

Photography can be quite challenging with the sun in your face for most of the day. Also this year no snow had fallen so making things a bit more difficult with lighting. For anybody that hasn't been, Axalp is thoroughly recommended, the climb is not for the faint hearted but well worth the effort in the end.
